THE DISSECTION ROOM

Welcome to The Dissection Room.

The pieces that line the walls here are remains from 2017 to 2022, now preserved in cyberglass jars and floating here in digital formaldehyde

and some of them still have heartbeats, and others will grow new nerves.

please be aware that ‘The Dissection Room’ contains imagery and themes that may be distressing or triggering.

‘Whatever Is Silenced Will Clamour To Be Heard’

2017

still-life photography series

These photos are the remaining pieces of ‘Whatever Is Silenced Will Clamour To Be Heard’, a series I made in 2017 for my photography course in college. The title’s borrowed from the pages of Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and I made the whole photo and video series on my iPhone 6, because I didn’t have a camera.

I wish I still had evidence of everything I made: there was once a ragged red dress and tattered fabric masks, safety-pinned and handstitched with inkjet-printed fabric versions of the photos.

There was also a video piece: my hands performing strange dissections on red roses, armed with a scalpel, sewing kit, and a bottle of red nail polish.

These four photos are the only surviving pieces I could scavenge after nine years.

‘Whatever Is Silenced Will Clamour To Be Heard’ will always be a series I hold close to my heart, because in its petals I can see the deepest roots of everything I’ve ever made since: Ragged stitches and scars, sharp edges, a needle-gleam and flowers with teeth and plants that scream.

‘There is something subversive about this garden… a sense of buried things bursting upwards, wordlessly, into the light, as if to point, to say: Whatever is silenced will clamour to be heard, though silently. … heat rises from the flowers themselves, you can feel it…’

‘Shards’

2021

smashed mug, rhinestones

‘diamond-fragments/root-system rewired’

2026 (remix of ‘SHARDS’, 2021)

Part of the series ‘Welcome To New Venus’

Plant, smashed mug, rhinestones, falcon’s eye crystal, coin.

Go and dig deep in the cardboard boxes of useless memories, the ones you’ve taped shut and torn at the corners, piled up in the cupboard behind the hoover and the little space heater, under the old Squier bass with the missing fret wires.

Part the veils, the cobwebs, plastic bags, faded tea towels, cause there’s glittering fragments from another world inside: old treasures, old curses.

Feel their edges, sharp on your palms, fresh as the day they shattered on the concrete in the yard out the back. They’re heavy with solvent and plastic, with the hum of Killing Joke’s Turn To Red and a phone set permanently on vibrate.

Now bury those sharp shards deep into the warm of the still-radioactive earth, with a crossroads-coin and a falcon’s-eye, and wait.

The roots hold them tight in a death-and-resurrection show. Nerves sizzle as they reconnect, reanimated by the lightning-sparks, the pour of the spring rain.

The flies buzz.

By the moonrise before May Day, bright green blades will cut themselves free from the once-scorched ground.

And the flowers will follow, in June.

My flag’s the cold of the stars going out

Hotwire the oestrogen supply

Shoot it out through the mainline

Skin is glass, it crawls with flies

Ain’t got the paperwork, you don’t qualify

Ain’t got the paperwork, you don’t qualify

What even are you?

(This body never did feel like home)

We’re just meat bags

Lock into pulse, drown it all out

It’s just fluid at the end of it all

It’s just fluid in between it all

(Screaming)

Hold a match to my bloodstream

Pour it out in the bathroom sink

Say a prayer, you can’t wash it out

It’s all over, the mist is rising

This body never did feel like home

(What even are you?)

We’re just meat bags

This body never did feel like home

This body never did feel like home

This body never did feel like home

This body never did feel like home

It’s just fluid at the end of it all

It’s just fluid in between it all

I’m just fluid in between it all

I’m just fluid in between it all
